Bought this for my six year old grandson and he reads it to me each weekend.62 year old Pop-Pop here, I had this book as kid and loved the stories, solving the mysteries and wanted to share this with my grandson. I take quite a bit of credit for teaching him t ready before 5yr and 2wks. Read to him every weekend since he was born, taught him the letters, sounds, letter sound combinations, and to read phonetically, rathe than by sight or memorization. His Mother and Aunt helped a lot also.I have taught my grandson that if he can read well, he can learn anything.

wonderful printing of these timeless classics!
first, allow me to say that i am quite enjoying these puffin classics editions of some of my favorite novels!this book is a great introduction (or continuation!) to holmes, watson, and of course, that atmospheric london fog (which apparently doesn't really exist as we believe it does). the following stories are included in this collection:the solitary cyclistcharles augustus milvertonblack peterthe golden pince-nezthe priory schoolthe beryl coronetthe engineer's thumbthe red-headed leaguea bonus here with the puffin classics is the addition of backstory included at the end of the book. here you can learn more about the author, the stories, the characters, and so much more. what a delightful thing to include!i have purchased most of these puffin classics editions, and will certainly look for future additions to add to my collection.

Great
My niece requested this book. She thoroughly enjoyed it. She took it to a doctor appointment; and he told her at her age, he too was reading Sherlock Holmes. He said being an investigator is similar to being a doctor, because both have to investigate to solve problems. Something to think about!

Holmes for kids... or is it?
This book is Sherlock Holmes, but aimed for young readers. The language doesn't seem to be re-written or simplified, and I wonder what it is about this that could make this compelling for kids as there are only adult characters who lived over a hundred years ago, unless the readers are super engaged with what they're reading. This doesn't remind me of any kids I know, but there's probably still plenty of kids out there that will dive into this (my kid didn't).I re-read this recently and didn't find any of the stories really fantastic, but they each provide an interesting snapshot of the great detective for those who only really know him through his novels. "The Solitary Cyclist" is about a young lady being led into a trap, "Charles Augustus Milverton" is about what becomes of blackmailers, "Black Peter" is about the death of a terrible human being, "The Golden Pince-Nez" is a sort of scholarly murder mystery with a delicious twist, "The Priory School" is about an aristocratic kidnapping (also with a delicious twist), "The Beryl Coronet" is about family squabbles, "The Engineer's Thumb" is a thoroughly unbelievable story of an engineer being misled, and "The Red-Headed League" is Holmes pitted against a master criminal.I probably enjoyed "The Golden Pince-Nez the most, although they all had some level of intrigue. The book comes with a glossary at the back (since kids these days have probably never seen an actual pince-nez), and a set of probing questions. Sure, they give the book a textbook feel to them (which is probably what this was intended to be - it would have been cool if my school had taught Holmes), but they're still fun.
