Q: does this fit the yamaha motif es rack, and if so, can you use to carry it and then just plug in on stage at a gig?

According to the specs, the motif es rack is 14.7" deep. Depending on how you mount it, it would protrude from a 14" deep case. Putting it in a 20" would leave it deep inside on the back which could be an advantage if you intend to leave all the cables connected and just coil up in the case after each use. However, if you intend to pull the cables each time yo use it it would be annoying reaching into the case to connect them each time.

Q: How deep are the lids?

The outside measurement of lids is 3.5". The inside depth is around 3". Rack rails, that hold the gear, are inserted around 3/4" from edges....so from rack rails to inside edge of outer lids is probably around 3 3/4".

Q: How well do these stack? Do they slide around?

Some of this would have to do with what you have inside. The heavier your equipment, the less it would slide. The do have rubber pads they help it from sliding. It is a really heavy, high-quality case. Stacking in a studio or onstage should not be an issue. I would not stack them (or any case) in a trailer without straps though.

Q: What are the front to back dimensions without the covers on?

Usually the inside dimensions are from front rail to back rail. Each end cover adds about 1.5-2" extra in depth for each end. Hope this helps, mine worked out perfectly for my rack effects gear.
