Alan Rickman’s best role

This is the movie that made me a fan of this amazing actor, Alan Rickman. Here he appears as the ghost of the man who wants his wife to get on with her life and to stop mourning him. He was such a great character actor and I encourage you to IMDb his filmography and watch everything. You’ll love him even more than his character in Harry Potter. I watched it again as soon as I got this dvd.

Rickman Fans...Delight!

While "Truly, Madly, Deeply" is not a new release, it is very much worth purchasing if you like music, romance...and, of course, if you - as I - enjoy Alan Rickman.TMD is about a woman ("Nina"/Juliet Stevenson) who has lost her boyfriend/lover ("Jamie"/Alan Rickman)...the love of her life...her reason for living...you know, all that passionate and everlasting stuff. Seems he died of complications from a sore throat, a definite wink for Rickman, known in the Biz as The Voice (even before Dogma), for obvious reasons...It seems Nina cannot get on with her life without Jamie. The man soothed her with CELLO MUSIC, for heaven's sake. He SANG to her...THEY sang duets and she played the piano and danced, ala Isadora Duncan. They delighted in mutually warped senses of humor... We're talking dream relationship here...and then...suddenly he's dead and - devastated -- Nina cannot face life without him.Ultimately, Nina's grieving and pain brings Jaime back...in a corporal form. Two drawbacks; he is ALWAYS cold, and some of his afterlife buddies have moved in along with him...video-watching ghosts from beyond, who take over Nina's little flat, making themselves at home in front of the telly watching old movies until all hours. At first, Nina is in heaven. Shutting herself up in her flat to glory in the return of the admittedly delicious Jamie, she effectively eliminates everything else in her world. But reality must enter the picture (this being Hollywood and all), and soon Jamie's annoying little habits begin to get under Nina's skin (think lying back in a warm tub, a cleansing mask on your face, and opening your eyes only see to a plastic fish - wearing glasses -- "swimming" at your face...or...being awakened with Rickman's soft baritone voice crooning "It's Raining in My Heart" in your ear as a cold glass of water is systematically drizzled on your head.) Jamie is also into totally rearranging Nina's apartment, something she has endeavored to make uniquely her own.The birth of a friend's baby and finding a new male acquaintance, are the catalysts that finally make Nina choose life over death. In a five-hankie scene, Jamie has Nina translate a beautiful poem - about a lover choosing to go on and not follow the dead love to the grave -- as he recites it in (poor) Spanish. If you are a Rickman fan, this is a MUST SEE. He is delightful as the moody, persnickety, musical Jamie...and it is an added treat to hear his rendition of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More". He has a not-half-bad singing voice, and it's obvious he was having a hoot doing it.If you view Rickman as merely "the cool guy who plays Severus Snape in the Harry Potter flicks", you ALSO must secure this movie! If you have enjoyed the man in other movies, but have never seen this one (it's novel...one of the few I can think of where he leaves ALL his clothes on -- including an overcoat -- and still remains the sensuous Alan Rickman we know and drool over) you SIMPLY MUST!Five enthusiastic stars for Rickman at his most divinely delicious!

As We All Grieve Alan Rickman

I haven't seen this in 30 yearsish (been doing an early 90s romance rewatch Green Card was before this), and I dont think I appreciated it enough then. It's a touching movie, that feels a bit meandering, but this sense of aimlessness feels in line with the story. Our main character is a bit stuck, then lost, then stuck again. And the end. The end will just hold your heart and squeeze. A quiet and tender movie about grief, love, and friendship.

I cried so hard...

Great writing and of course Alan nailed it with his actingMain character did awesome as well...Spolier:Your dead husband and love of your life asks if you want him to leave because you are looking a new love and you cry and tell him no, don't leaveYet!... the same night you sleep with the other man?Ugh!!!!! I stopped the movie at that pointI felt sick...I had to get up and take a breakAnd cry my heart out....And rage...I hate her...It was beautifulI went back and finished it for Alan because if this was a book I would have tossed it or given it awayBut ugh

I Rewatch This One Regularly

This romantic comedy begins with a distraught widow sobbing out her grief to a therapist, who sits there unmoving, allowing her to express her loneliness, her rage and her sense of betrayal: How could she be left without the one person she loves beyond life itself! Our establishing scenes reveal she is a translator and language instructor at a busy facility in London, surrounded by supportive co-workers and friends. Other scenes show us the chaos at her home, with plumbing problems, rat infestation and careless housekeeping. She is surrounded by various workmen all of whom want to help this lonely widow.Imagine her surprise when she is idling at her piano one evening, sadly reminiscing about the duets she and her husband used to play (he was a cellist), when WE can see him behind her. She first thinks she is imagining his part of the duet, until she pauses, slowly turns and SHE can see him, too!Now our story REALLY begins! The cast:* Juliet Stevenson ("Bend it Like Beckham") is Nina, alone, then not alone... Definitely NOT alone! Watch her try to adjust.* Alan Rickman ("Harry Potter") her much-loved Jamie, gone, and then not gone...* Deborah Findlay ("Cranford") is her sister Claire. See what happens when Claire suggests Nina give Jamie's cello to her son for his music class at school.* Bill Paterson ("Outlander") is her boss, Sandy. He speaks six languages but still needs Nina to translate letters from his girlfriend in Spain.* Michael Maloney ("Me and Mrs Jones") Mark breaks up a potential fistfight in a coffee shop. He's a counselor for Downs Syndrome youngsters; he takes one look at Nina and likes what he sees.* Christopher Rozycki ("Downton Abbey") Titus is doing cabinet work for Nina, but this Polish immigrant wants her to go to Paris with him for the weekend. "I am Polish, I haf GRRREAT passion!"In my opinion, Juliet Stevenson is a vastly underrated comedienne. I LOVED her in "Bend it Like Beckham" ("...get your dirty lesbian feet out of MY shoes!") and this one, directed by Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") fully displays her talents. Watch her narrate her biography while hopping on one foot. This has so many scenes to recommend it I don't know where to begin. I got mine from Amazon and re-watch it regularly.
