Long lead time, but worth it
First, it's worth understanding that these are the same as the spicy XSD brand peanuts that are no longer available. In fact, "Xin Sheng De" is clearly written on the packaging, though they ship in a bag instead of a screw-top container. This is a good thing, since the XSD brand was my go-to for spicy peanuts back when it was available for subscription.Second, it took quite a while to get my order. I ordered a bag of these in late January and received them in early March. Plan accordingly -- but the wait is worth it. These are big, crunchy peanuts with just the right amount of spicy oil and actual dried pepper pod bits and prickly ash pods. It does indeed create the numbing/tingling sensation associated with szechuan peppercorns. And they taste great! Suitable as either a standalone snack or as a topper for salad or stew. If used as a garnish, I recommend adding them at the end. My partner and I have found that cooking the peanuts (or rather, the prickly ash pods) can impart a soapy flavor to soup or to fried solids that isn't always palatable.At the end of the day, however, these are the best spicy peanuts I've ever encountered and I heartily recommend them. Hopefully the manufacturer will resume support for subscriptions so I can get a regular fix without having to remember to reorder!
