Protect what's important
Does your gears and clothes important to you during your travels? If so, invest just a bit of time and patience. We managed to test out our cargo bag in its first brutal trial run. After reading up on all the complaints and witnessed myriad improper approaches for the cargo mounting during our previous travels, I went ahead and came up with a game plan that greatly safeguarded our gears and clothes during our latest travel to the wet and frozen wonderlands, ranging between 65 to 80 MPH.Preparation:From all the mistakes I've picked up within the comments and from previous road trips, things just get shoved into the cargo bag and tied down. The shapes of the cargo bags at the top of the vehicles appeared like dead carcasses were shoved into them and strapped down. Some were overly strapped down, and appeared deformed. Others were overstuffed, and appeared to look like over inflated balloons. Some cargo bags were strapped down at slanted angles which resulted poor aerodynamic, which could be seen during foggy and rainy days, creating unique trails. So, $5 of 0.5-in PVC pipes, $5 of 90 and 45 degrees elbows, $5 of T joint. Slap together, and create a frame. Shove the frame in, and the cargo bag is now aerodynamically shaped with or without cargo within it. The built in straps on the cargo bag can taught the surfaces of the cargo bag, constantly improving the wind flow to minimize drag.Cargo capacity:We shoved our overly packed 48in x 19in suitcase, HDX 27-gallons (yellow lid and black body) packed with gears, and a small 19in x 12in carry-on bag full of the missus's beauty supply. There were still plenty of room along the side and the front of the bag to house 8 pairs of shoes and boots, and oddball equipment. Let's just say the cargo bag was very, very, very full, yet still retained its aerodynamic shape.Waterproofing:All our gears and bags were nice and dry, even when we went through days of rain, followed by snow, and frozen nights. Not even a drop of water made into the bag. Moisture on the other hand can bypass the zipper. It's a given even for the hard case cargo boxes.Durability:No crack, hole, tear, or damage could be seen after the bag got bombarded, including small size rocks fired at us at high speed from transporting vehicles, as well as falling debris in the highly vegetated areas of the woodlands.Mounting and stowing away:We simply broke down our frame and rolled the bag away, and place them in a small little space within our hall way closet. Frame and bag is no larger than our vacuum cleaner's footprint. Our rack will always be on top of our vehicle for transporting needs.Aerodynamic Drag:Our SUV commonly get about average about 16.5 MPG at 75 MPH with the rack on top. Tossing the cargo bag on top at full capacity in its designed form, the total average MPG dropped down to 16.2.Noise:Since our cargo rack makes tons of noise on top at 92 dBs, there's no additional noticeable noise level with the full size cargo bag. No, we didn't suffer 92 dBs in the cabin; a constant dull sound at 39 dBs. The sensor was mounted behind the rack's fairing to obtain proper reading at the top. I've removed the rack and just slapped the bag on top, the bare roof already made 84 dBs at 75 MPH because of the crossbars measured at the rear protected area of the vehicle's roof rack, and the bag raised the noise level to 87 dBs measured at the rear of the bag. Not a whole lot more noise.Pet peeve:The only thing I didn't like is the small zipper handle. Cold/freezing days, the small zipper handles were not enough to hold onto. I always have a small carabiner on my keys for such issue. Experiences of an aged traveler count quite a bit.

Not perfectly water tight as designed unless loaded particularly.
Not as pictured in the thumbnail - I suspect they revised the design at some point. If you get one that has handles in all 4 corners like the one I got, it is all soft and flexible (not semi-rigid), and you'll want to load the bulkiest/widest thing in front to try to give the wind-facing side some structure, because: There is a giant zipper that goes all the way around and velcro patches that hold a flap down over the zipper - sort of. If the load is soft or uneven, the straps further back will pull the top back and down and air can get under this flap while driving. The air makes the flap blow up, and can allow rainwater to enter through the zipper teeth. Other than that, it's fine. I read the other reviews before buying, so I knew it might not be water-tight, so I loaded stuff up there that wouldn't be sensitive to moisture, and laid a giant microfiber blanket under everything to both protect the bag and absorb any water that made it through. It wasn't like there were puddles or anything, but it definitely wasn't dry (700 mile trip in the pacific northwest with times of pouring rain and snow). The company could benefit from adding a thin velcro strip all the way around this front lip to help alleviate this issue, because other than that, it was perfect. Came with loads of different straps to accommodate various attachment situations. On our trip it was attached flat on the roof of a car without a roof rack, with 3rd party attachment loops and a pad between it and the roof.

For the price, I would recommend passing on this one
Travelling by car with a six month old grand daughter, I knew we would need the extra space for luggage. The product description seemed exactly what we needed. The carrier was easy to attach to our Subaru Outback with the roof rack, It stayed put and no noise from the straps (I used all 6 to make sure it was secure). My complaint is about the fabric. Where it came in contact with luggage, the rubber backing pulled away from the nylon fabric and shredded into pieces - see my photo. This will cause it to become non-water resistant, which was one of the reasons I bought it. Fortunately we did not have rain over the weekend. I will probably donate it or sell it on line and use any proceeds toward a hard shell carrier. Otherwise, I will have to bag everything to keep it dry on the next trip! Very disappointed with product performance for the price.

Worked great for us!
1800 miles and it still looks brand new. This was great! I had 5 suitcases and 2 duffle bags in here and still had room for more. Things did get a little damp from the pouring rain - not soaked, but a little wet. I think the water got in through the zipper. Next time I would just slide the suitcases into trash bags to be safe. This secured to the top of a Ford Flex with just side rails, no cross bars but it stayed put. I put a piece of the rubberized shelf liner under it just to be sure we didn’t scratch the roof and to help keep it from sliding. Worked great. I would buy this again.

Large, durable but not 100% waterproof
Very nice and large. Can fit 4-5 pieces of luggage plus carry on bags. Very durable and the straps are great for making it tied down. Drove with it through a rain storm and the some of the luggage at the front were a little wet but not a huge issue.

Don’t use with roof rack that doesn’t have holes on the arms for straps.
I ended up returning this item because my SUV doesn’t allow the straps to run through the roof rack. Has solid arms on either side and none in the front. Therefore my only option to secure would be the longer straps provided to run under the roof and through the inside of the car. However once navigating back at the roof rack would have to bring the strap over instead of under or through the arms. This didn’t make me feel comfortable that my bag and contents would be secure at high speeds on the interstates.

Did what it needed to do
Used for moving across state. Packed it full of clothing for the drive. Wished material was a bit sturdier, but it worked for the job it was purchased for.
